International Student strikes unexpected trouble down under.
A young international student studying in Australia was playing around with a vehicle on the side of the road, after a few too many drinks. He accidentally tripped, and in an unfortunate twist of fate, the car rolled over his back.
The student was admitted to hospital with a broken back. He needed to be immobilised for a few weeks – which meant no movement, sitting or standing. He is still in hospital, and once discharged, will need to be in a back brace for some time.
As you can probably imagine, this case was anything but straightforward. His Australian Visa was about to expire. His OSHC Worldcare policy was also due to expire in a few weeks. And to make matters more complicated, his family wanted him moved to a private hospital, where the treating doctor requested $25,000 upfront, before seeing the patient.
Fortunately, the young man was well insured with three policies - an OSHC Worldcare policy, his Health Insurance from home and a policy covering repatriation.
This case required a great deal of liaison and coordination between Kim Pham, OSHC Claims Team Leader and the OSHC Claims Team, as well as Nicole Pridham and her Medical Assistance Team mates, who liaised with other insurance companies, to ensure the best possible solution for the young student. This highlights just how important it is for different divisions within Mondial Assistance to stay connected and work together synergistically.
