Remote location calls for immediate medical evacuation

Imagine being stranded on a remote island with limited medical facilities and communication, when suddenly you’re struck down by severe abdominal pains. What would you do?

After travelling for eight months, a young traveller, was visiting an island in the South Pacific when they called their family to contact Mondial Assistance. They had been suffering from severe abdominal pain for an extended period of time, and were becoming distressed. The remote island had limited medical facilities, and it was difficult to maintain communication.

After consulting our Chief Medical Officer, the decision was made to evacuate the patient as soon as possible.  The Medical Assistance Case Manager, asked the customer to call periodically, so they could monitor the patient’s medical condition, and provide advice on the evacuation process.

Before commencing the evacuation, the Medical Assistance Case Manager contacted the Australian Consulate on the island for assistance, advising them of the patient’s condition. A combination of the conditions on the island made the evacuation procedure quite complicated. Due to these difficulties, the Medical Assistance Case Manager had to source options for a helicopter evacuation.

The Medical Assistance Case Manager finished their shift for the day and advised the patient that when they next called in a Senior Registered Nurse would be looking after them.  The Senior Registered Nurse provided medical support to the patient monitoring their condition until an evacuation could be conducted to a location with sufficient medical facilities to conduct a thorough examination.

The Senior Registered Nurse completed the rest of the evacuation plan and waited until the helicopter could safely pick up the patient. The patient was successfully transported to another location, where after a medical examination, it was recommended that he be evacuated for urgent surgery.

The same Medical Assistance Case Manager and Senior Registered Nurse then arranged for the evacuation and admission into the  hospital, along with all the necessary paperwork for surgery. The operation was successful.
